    Why you'll love this recipe

Candy melts are a product that I like to use for easy candy making or a pop of color when decorating baked goods. They come in several different colors and have a flavor similar to white chocolate.

    Are candy melts chocolate?

An important thing to note is that candy melts are NOT actually chocolate. They are made with sugar and vegetable fats—not cocoa butter. I love candy melts because they are so easy to use. Since they aren't chocolate, they don't need to be tempered.

    Heather's helpful hints

Make sure your silicone mold is completely dry before adding your candy and chocolate. Any moisture will complicate the process of making your candies.

    Prep Time: 10 minutes
    Cook Time: 20 minutes
    Total Time: 30 minutes
    Yield: 48

    Equipment

    • heart-shaped candy molds

    Ingredients

    • 4 packages candy melts assorted colors

    Instructions

    • Heat candy melts in the microwave using instructions on the package. Place melted candy in your mold using a spoon, melting bottle or disposable decorating bag. When mold is filled, lightly tap it several times on a counter to eliminate air bubbles in the candy.
    • Place the filled mold in the refrigerator or freezer until candy has set. When the underside of the candy mold appears to be frosted, you're ready to unmold the candy. If there are any dark areas on the underside of the mold, it means some of the coating is still soft. In this case, chill the mold for a few more minutes, until the entire mold has a frosted appearance.
    • Turn over the mold about an inch above a flat surface covered with parchment or waxed paper. Gently flex or tap the mold and out come the candies!

These candy's are absolutely beautiful and the pictures are some of my favorites. I do love how you capture the essence of the product with your photo's. The colors you use to set off the food, closeups, holding the finished products, fuzzy background etc.are so creative. You can tell that you love the whole process.

Well thank you for such a lovely compliment! These were fun to stage for pictures because they are so unique :-) I did have to work hard to make the background blurry, but I thought it was a fun effect!

Heather your low key celebration of Valetine's sounds just perfect: I hope you and Matt enjoy the lunch and the film. Those candy melts look so, so pretty and tempting too. I bet they taste delicious too.

This may come as a shock to you but Stefano and I never used to celebrate this holiday! ???? It's just not us! Plus, my birthday is 2 days before and I like the celebrations to be all about me, me, me!!! ????
Anyway, Her Majesty came and then Sofia and everything changed. We celebrate with them and for them. I agree with Antonia. She is totally right!
Now, your treats. You know right that they look AWESOME? I have never heard of candy melts. You always teach me something new in the sweet department. They are so perfect they look like they are on display in the window of a professional pastry store. Beautiful!

Oh Francesca, your comment made me chuckle! Your birthday should be 100% all about YOU! As I've gotten a little older, I've been surprised to hear that more of my coworkers and friends don't do much with their significant other on Valentine's Day- and I think that is WONDERFUL! Who are we to let the media tell us when and how to love each other?! That being said, I think it will always be a fun holiday for little ones and I think that's exactly the way it should be :) Thank you for your kind words about the chocolates. It was my first time trying to make candies and it was certainly and adventure :)

These are so cute Heather and such a great idea! I adore the colors and your photo. I will have to try out the candy melts. Before we had kids, we would try and do a little something for Valentine's, maybe going out to eat. But, it wasn't a big deal to us either. But now, we try and do something fun and make it a bigger deal for our little ones. My daughter loves Valentine's Day and it reminds me of how it was when I was a kid. Giving Valentine's to your friends and eating treats. I think Valentine's is so fun as a kid, but I am totally with you as an adult.

Such a great observation Antonia! I think the holiday is much more fun when you are younger. I remember making my Valentines cards and handing them out in class. We even made mail boxes and "delivered" them to each person... so much fun! I loved the heart shaped smores you made with your daughter :-) You're definitely making memories she will have for many years!

Oh yeah, I remember the mailboxes! We used to make them too! It was so much fun! You are too sweet Heather, thank you! I showed my daughter your hearts and she wants to make them :D

Too funny! I actually found one of my old mailboxes when I was home visiting my parents a couple years ago. It was a shoe box with hole cut in the top decorated with pink and red paper and TONS of glitter! ;-)

Yay for those candy melts Heather! You know how thrilled I am to have discovered a store nearby selling them! Your photos are so pretty and inviting, enough to make anyone want to celebrate Valentine's Day! But you're right, it's a tough time for some isn't it? I'm sorry you've experienced that, me too. But not now! Your plans sound perfect! This weekend is also my mum's 80th birthday (which I can't believe, she is so young inside and out...) and I'll have all my chicks back in the nest. Then Sunday evening, hubby and I are going out for a Valentine's meal, just the two of us :-) Happy Valentine's Day to you my friend, have a wonderful time :-) <3 xo

Oh yes, I do indeed remember us talking about candy melts before! I really do love them and was delighted to find these on sale at the craft store in our town. What an exciting week you have coming up Sherri! An 80th birthday is a big milestone, how wonderful that your mom is able to celebrate with loved ones. My mom turned 70 this past fall and we had a small surprise party for her as she doesn't love big crowds. Happy Valentine's day to you and I hope you have a nice dinner for two on Sunday!

Oh that sounds lovely for your mom Heather, same with my mine, we're just having a family party. Tried to do a surprise, but it's too difficult trying to muster the troops without my mum finding out, lol! I can't believe she's going to be 80 though, I remember when my grandmother had hers! Thank you, and you too Heather, have a wonderful time with your hubby! xo
